A new environmental issue has quickly grabbed public attention: microplastics, found everywhere, from the bottom of the ocean to our bloodstreams. Amazingly, each of us ingests a credit card’s worth of plastics weekly-- to unknown effect-- and microplastic particles in the ocean now outnumber the stars in our galaxy by a factor of 500. What do and don’t we know about microplastics? What surprising ways do they get into the ocean-- and into us? And most importantly, what can you do about it?
The lecture is presented by author-naturalist Mike Weilbacher, who travels the region lecturing on nature and environmental issues from climate change in Philly to the extraordinary monarch butterfly migration phenomenon. A former non-profit executive, Mike's lectures have been enjoyed by thousands of people over the years. His first book, Wild Philly, published last spring, highlights the nature of our region, and signed copies will be available at the lecture.
